THE SALE IS ON! JOIN THE FUN ON AUGUST 2011! Scroll down for Hints and Helpful Information. From antiques to collectibles, handcrafts to clothing, candles to produce -- all the good stuff will be on US 60 in Carter County, Kentucky. Carter Countians should contact the Grayson Tourism Commission with their location and a summary of the items they will have for sale. The Commission will coordinate the event and promote the day-long-drive-and-shop adventure for everyone on August 5th and 6th, 2011. TO PARTICIPATE You do not have to register this year to participate. All you need to do is find a site on US 60 between the Boyd and Rowan County lines and be ready to sell by 8 am on Friday and Saturday, August 5th and 6th. SHOULD I CONTACT THE TOURISM COMMISSION? If you will have unusual items for sale, you may want to let the commission know so that they may add your items to the ads for the event. WHAT DOES IT COST? NOTHING! There is no cost to participate and the Tourism Commission will advertise the event extensively to bring visitors to our area. WHERE CAN YOU HAVE YOUR SALE? A site along US 60 in Carter County. You must get permission from the property owner if you do not own the site. WHAT CAN I SELL? Any legal item may be offered for sale. It doesn't even have to be of the "Yard Sale" variety. Retail businesses are encouraged to become involved and move some items to the outdoors for a "street sale." Groups may want to offer concession sales! Crafters may have lots of goodies to interest visiting buyers! Find something in your attic or closet, register and get to US 60 for this one day selling extravaganza, You can see that with enough participation, this could become a HUGE EVENT that draws visitors to the area to see what wonderful people and places exist here in Carter County, Kentucky. I WANT TO SELL CONCESSIONS, WILL I NEED ANY PERMITS? If you will be preparing and/or selling food on site at the sale, you must contact the Carter County Health Department and obtain your permit for food sales. It's good policy to have that permit posted for your potential customers to see -- and besides that -- it's the law. The Health Department will be cruising the route so contact them early to be a well-prepared food vendor! If you would like to participate or have questions, please contact the Grayson Area Tourism Commission at the numbers listed to the left. THE GRAYSON AREA TOURISM COMMISSION ASSUMES NO LIABILITY FOR ACCIDENTS OR DAMAGES.
HINTS and HELPFUL INFORMATION HOW MUCH TERRITORY DOES THE SALE ROUTE COVER? US 60's route across Carter County travels around 45 miles. It passes through the cities of Olive Hill and Grayson and wanders through numerous smaller rural communities. Click here for an image of a Carter Co. Highway Map. The 2010 sale will probably spill over into Rowan and Boyd Counties a bit, too! ARE THERE ANY PLACES TO STAY NEAR THE SALE ROUTE and SHOULD I MAKE RESERVATIONS? There are several great choices should you choose to visit the area overnight. Click here to jump to a page with contact numbers for hotels, motels and campgrounds. Reservations are encouraged. WHAT TIME DOES THE SALE BEGIN? The starting time will vary somewhat with each individual seller -- however, the tourism commission encourages each site to be ready for business by 8 a.m. on Saturday morning, August . IS THERE AN ADMISSION FEE? No. You should never have to pay an admission fee. WHAT ABOUT TRAFFIC? With so much activity along US 60, it will be especially important to honor the rules of the road. Avoid making U-turns. Keep an eye out for pedestrians and be watchful of other vehicles, too. The driver in front of you might slow down or even stop to get a better look at a sale -- make sure you allow plenty of room to come to a halt yourself. WHAT ABOUT FOOD? (SHOPPING MAKES ME HUNGRY!) Grayson offers many wonderful choices for your dining pleasure. The Interstate 64 Exit area is packed with fast food options and great restaurants featuring buffets. Home-style cooking, your favorite dairy bar and pizza places as well as authentic Mexican, Italian and Chinese food are all available. (HINT! Plan on eating a little early or a little late during Breakfast and Lunch to avoid the crush of hungry shoppers.) I LOVE THIS SHOPPING DAY! WHERE ELSE CAN I FIND BARGAINS? Grayson has superb gift and antique shops, many of which will be right on US 60! For a side-trip, venture north on Carol Malone Boulevard to the Grayson Antique Mall or park and try out all the great shops on Main Street. ANY MORE GOOD ADVICE? Dress for warm weather and drink plenty of fluids. Our weather has been hot and humid this summer. Don't underestimate the power of the sun! You might plan a break in the middle of the day (and the hottest part!) to visit one of our restaurants or to picnic at Grayson Lake or Carter Caves.
