Medical Professional of the Year (Formerly EMT of the Year) This category has been changed to allow nominations for doctors, nurses, home health personnel and other professionals in the medical field.Dr. Harold Shufflebarger
Harold is a graduate of Western Kentucky University and the University of Louisville's School of Medicine. He is the husband of Hazel E. Shufflebarger and has two children, Alicia Gire and Eric Shufflebarger. Dr. Shufflebarger has been practicing as a General Medicine Physician for 46 years.
S.U. Pratt Community Service Award This is awarded to an individual who has excelled at their work and accomplishments for the Grayson Community during the past year.Harold Horton
Harold is the husband of Jami Horton and they have one child, Kristin Horton. Mr. Horton is the Promotions Director at WGOH/WUGO radio station in Grayson. His responsibilities include promoting, editing, and selling ads. Harold has also received the Kids Safety Award.R.E. Applegate Memorial Award
This award is given posthumously to the family of a deceased individual who has contributed in some special way to the life of the community.Oscar Haight Jr.
Oscar Haight Jr. was the husband of the late Bea Haight, the father of John O'Leary Haight the grandfather of 3 and the great-grandfather of 2. Oscar attended the University of Kentucky but earned no degree. He retired as Linotype Operator from the Ashland Daily newspaper. Oscar published the Sandy Valley Enquirer and was the elected Mayor of Grayson in the 1950's. Oscar Haight was honored with being Kentucky Colonel and the Grand Marshall at Grayson Memory Days in 1999.
J. Lowell Lusby
J. Lowell Lusby was the husband of the late Lela Stone Lusby and the father of Nan Lusby Griffith, Sylvia Lusby Giese and Martha Lusby Jordan. Mr. Lusby was a graduate of Christian Normal Institute (now KCC), Milligan College and Miami University. He received Honorary Doctorate Degrees at Milligan College and KCC. Mr. Lusby was the publisher of the East KY Journal (now Grayson Journal Enquirer) and succeeded his father Dr. Lusby as President of KCC.
Larry Lee Rogers
Larry Lee Rogers was the husband of Angela Rogers and the father of Adrianna and Lauren Rogers. Larry received a four-year degree from UK College of Agriculture. He worked at the County Extension Office and served as the County Extension Agent for Agriculture for approximately 25 years. Mr. Rogers enjoyed serving his community in agriculture and community projects. His vision for Carter and Elliott counties was to see the development of tourism. His life touched many and those who knew him will always remember him with fondness and as a man dedicated to God.
Glenn Edward WentzGlenn Edward Wentz was the husband of Robin Withrow Wentz and the father of Rebecca and Katie Wentz. Eddie was a graduate of Morehead State University with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science. He was President of Charles Adams Insurance where he issued insurance policies, performed appraisals and acted upon claims. Eddie had been a part of the Grayson Jaycees and was an active coach for a girls softball team. Eddie touched many with his outstanding character. He will be forever remembered for his unique personality that endeared him to so many.
Keystone of Grayson Award This is the Chamber's "Hall of Fame" award. This award is given to honor those individuals who have contributed to the civic, educational, business or spiritual life of the Grayson area over a decade or more on a regular consistent basis.Van Baker
Van Baker is the husband of Justine Baker and the father of Van Jr. and Boyd Baker. Mr. Baker received his bachelors degree at the highly esteemed Vanderbilt University. Van is the retired owner of Baker's Department Store in Grayson. He was also the treasurer for the Grayson Area Chamber of Commerce.
Mike Malone
Mike Malone is the husband of Rosetta Malone and the father of Stephanie Huddle, Fred Malone, Lane Malone and Lindsay Malone. Mike graduated from Prichard High School and the KY School of Mortuary Science. Mr. Malone has been practicing as a funeral director for over 33 years at his family owned funeral home. Malone Funeral Home received the "Eagle" award which is given in recognition of professional and community service.
Dr. Rodney T. Gross Youth Leadership Award This award is given to individuals 22 years of age and younger who have excelled in leadership and volunteerism in the community.Leslie Rene Byrd
Leslie is a graduate of East Carter High School in Grayson. She is now in her freshman year at Morehead State University. Leslie has been recognized as a National Leader at Work and has been awarded with Hal Rogers Anti-Violence Award. She has also received the Regional Honors Award, Most leadership ability Superlative and was a Senior Salute. Leslie plans to major in biology and become a Physicians Assistant.
Business Person of the Year This award is given to the individual who has been recognized to be operating above expectation.Dianne Ferguson
Dianne Ferguson is the wife of Avery Ferguson and the mother of Courtney Adkins and Corey Ferguson. Dianne is a graduate of East Carter High School and is the owner of Wilma's Dress Shop in Grayson. Dianne has 15 years of experience in her field of buying and selling women's apparel. Mrs. Ferguson is a member of the United Way and was voted "Best place to buy formal wear" by the Grayson Enquirer.
Peter Kee
Peter Kee is the husband of Hannah Kee and the father of Anthony and Brian Kee. Peter earned his Associate Degree at the University of Kentucky. Peter is the owner of Kee's Farm Supply located in Grayson and Greenup County. He serves on the Board of Directors for O.L.B.H. and the Soil Conservation Board. Peter also serves on the Southern States Board and is an active part in local 4-H and FFA clubs.
Educator of the Year This award is presented to the Teacher(s) who the Chamber feels play active roles in shaping young people's lives through their teaching.Chris Blair
Chris Blair is the son of Wendell and Donna Blair and the brother of Kellie Thompson and Michelle Baldridge. Chris attended Boyd County High School and went on to Eastern Kentucky University where he received a degree in Music/Education. He is currently teaching at East Carter Middle and East Carter High School as a Band Director. Chris also directs the Flag Corp., Drum Line and teaches concert music. Chris was a part of the Glassman Drum Corp at Dayton, Ohio and got the chance to tour the United States for 8 weeks.
Ellen Fryman
Ellen Fryman is the wife of Paul Fryman and the mother of Emily and Phillip Fryman. Ellen received her Masters in Education at Eastern Kentucky University and a Bachelor's degree in Education at Ashbury College. She is currently a primary teacher and has 16 years of service. Ellen has played a huge part in the St. Jude Math-A-Thon where she serves as school coordinator. Ellen also writes for Bristol House/Cokesbury publishers producing children's Sunday School curriculums.
Firefighter of the Year This award is given to the person that has used their Fire fighting knowledge to help others and the community. Joshua RogersJoshua Rogers is the son of Delmar and Wannetta Rogers. He graduated from East Carter High School and has had various fire and emergency response classes. Josh works as the front desk clerk at the Holiday Inn Express and is also an associate at Malone Funeral Home. Some of his duties at the Holiday Inn include customer relations, reservations and checking customers in and out of the motel. While at Malone Funeral Home, Josh helps meet the needs of families that have lost a loved one. Josh is very active in his church as a bass guitar player. He also uses his talent to play for a local singing group.
Law Officer of the Year This award is given to the Law Officer who the Chamber feels has made an impact on the community in his/her own way. Marlene Stewart Marlene Stewart is the wife of Darrell E. Stewart and the mother of Chandra and Caleb Stewart. Marlene graduated from East Carter High School in 1977. She has pursued her career of being a child sexual abuse prevention officer and also serves as a patrol officer. Marlene has been an active part of the Grayson police force for 3 years and 6 months. Her duties include investigating child abuse cases and providing child abuse programs for daycares, pre-schools and elementary schools. Marlene has been selected to be a member of the Carter Co. Domestic Violence Task Force and has served as a committee member of "Open Wings".
